The earth's mass is great enough that when the planet was forming, gravity pulled it into a spherical shape.

Because of gravity. When the planet was formed it would have been in a fairly liquid state (I think this is correct) and therefore the shape would become spherical as that is the logical shape as everything would 'go' towards the centre. By the way, why is your question under television??
