"I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth."

Funny you should mention that. Here in Canada one of the first cases which prompted the inevitable legalizing of Gay marriage dealt with the Taxation without representation argument. It went something like this, I as a Gay man, a citizen, and a tax payer contribute directly through taxation for the betterment of the nation and society within, Therefore by definition and by declaration of the constitution (Canadian mind you) in regards to equality under the law including partnerships both civil or religious (marriage) I as a fully paying member of society, through contribution of taxation, have the expectation and thus the right to marriage.
This was how it was presented to the courts which have a duty to uphold and in cases, interpret, constitutional law. That is why they are there. Contrary to what some say, judges do have to occasionally broaden the law of the land so as to meet both the letter and spirit of the law. Now in the US, the constitution does not implicitly define equality for all, just "all men are created equal", as such conservative justices have kept the laws somewhat within this construct (The E.R.A. has never passed). As such, gay rights even with a taxation argument cannot win. In Canada, because our constitution stipulates clearly that equality is for all of it's citizens, it allows and allowed the courts to accept the taxation argument and did not abrogate the letter or spirit of the constitution.

excellent question, my answer is the same as your question: why? seems a bit cheeky.
edward the first used to go to jewish money lenders to finance his wars. when he had exhausted the jewish coffers, he kicked the jews out of england. nasty cheeky man. i believe the yiddish word for king edward's behaviour is "chutzpah", as is the behaviour of govts who berate gays then tax us just the same.

because the government has got to have as much money as it can get no matter who is paying the taxes. it shouldn't matter what orientation you choose. a person is a person no matter what. it's because people are very immature and want to stick there nose in everyone Else's business. all the people that are against (HATE) gays, lesbians etc..
need to take a look in the mirror. they have there own issues to deal with.

Sadly, because they can do it. Governments are run by people, people have prejudices and are unfair.
