The thermometer should show 100 deg C or 212 deg F (provided the water was boiling at sea level). If the thermometer is not designed to go as high as those temperatures, it would probably break.

Depends on what is the maximum temp that the thermometer has been calibrated for. This depends on the thickness of the inner tube and the length of the thermometer.
For a normal thermometer used to check body temperature, it measures max 40-45 degrees C. As water boils at 100 deg, the thermometer bulb will crack and mercury will flow out.
For commercial thermometers used to measure high temp in labs etc, nothing will happen. mercury will rise in the tube and show you a reading of 100 deg.

well thermometers are designed to record temperatures, this is done by the liquid inside the thermometer's bulb expanding once it is heated. As the liquid expands it rises up the thermometer to give you the temperature of the boiling water.

Depends on the range of the thermometer, water boils at 240F. Some thernometers can "take that" some can't...

Depending on the type of thermometer, if it is alcoholic thermometer or Mercury thermometer, the boiling point of pure water is 100 degree Celsius , and if u use the proper thermometer ( range of measuring temp.) you will get the boiling point ot water you want to measure its boiling point.

I have tried it earlier and the result i had to buy another thermometer. the thermometers that are used for measuring body temperature are not capable of withstanding the sudden high temp, but if you try the same with an industrial one it may show you the water's temperature.
