There are a pile of bricks in the Tate gallery in London, if they are art, then i prefer graffiti. I saw a USA web site and it was dedicated to the art of graffiti. Art is in the eye of the beholder and sometimes from the mouth of the artist and those selling his art. Tony in remotest Isan.

i personally think that some forms of graffiti are good. If you look closely you can really see how good the drawings are. The people who do the graffiti must be very talented in themselves. It would just be a lot easier if they'd do their art on paper instead of in the street!

there is the basic tagging thingy..which looks a mess and means i cant read road signs..but then there is graffiti that i would consider art...I'm talking about the murals that can and quite often are created by young people with vision and talent..as long as its legal..and safe..for example..building site hoardings..why not commission graffiti artists to do a mural..say on local history....or create a street scene..the possibilities are endless

The archetypal example is Jean-Michel Basquiat, who started with graffiti and became an international celebrity artist, and whose work is still exhibited in prestigious musuems.

Read about him here:

His later work retained the "graffiti" sensibilty; it's brilliant stuff. I think he's pretty solid proof that graffiti is art.

No - I feel quite strongly about this. I live in Bristol, where we have to suffer the vandalism of a pratt called 'Banksy'; the arrogant tosser thinks it's perfectly okay to deface other people's property on the grounds that it's art, and he maintains his mediocre stencil-pictures are making some kind of statement. Worse, he inspires others, so any one who can work out how to point an aerosol at a wall thinks they're an artist. Grrrrrrr!

Yes, it is. You could also ask if cutting up a cow and mounting the bits in glass cases is art, and yes, it is - according to Damien Hirst, one of Britain's most (in)famous artists. Defining what is and isn't art is really difficult. And personal!

At 54 I would even say it is art. The problem is that cities and communities need to provide walls, or programs to encourage it's distinct art form and not on people houses, or public buildings.
