my telephone surface jacks are a mess. The covers are off and wont go back on again. I need to know how to install new ones. I know you can buy new jacks but how do you hook up the wires ?

It's not always so straight forward:
Although you only need 2 wires, you often find that there are 4 wires in the box. Phone technicians usually use 4 wire cable by default, in case you want a second line, or one pair breaks.
The trick is to find out which 2 you need (are "live").
A volt meter set at 50 or 100 VDC will do the trick, because your live phone line has a DC voltage across (depends on the country, anything between 24 and 60 Volt). Make sure you are not bare foot or touch a water pipe, although not lethal, touching a phone line and ground simultaneously gives you an unpleasant tingle, especially when someone calls you while you work!

Hook up the two wires to the red and green, ignore the others. Think Christmas when fixing phone jacks.
