Both are similar. I know in this day and age its cool to destroy everything European - but there is something very European you might like if you love dancing and that's 'couples' dancing. Where the man and woman dance Together. Unique to that culture, often not sexual. Give it a shot. Then mix it with the other and you'll have more power on the dance floor. For a blend of ethnicites - Absolute Tango - where you can see real Argentinian and not that BS dance competition stuff, and you'll see what I mean. The best dancing is your own style - Oh, check out Kathakali (sp?) and traditional Balinese - trust me you will NEVER view dance the same way.

Hip Hop because not everybody's belly is cut out for belly dancing. I seen some huge bellies. Unfortunately hiphop is made for everybody big and small.

The variety of moves and the scope for collaborative dancing make hip-hop more entertaining to watch, for me.

I'm sure I'm missing some of the subtlety of belly-dancing, but Hip-Hop just seems like it has a lot more going on.

Personally I think bellydance is way better than hip hop. Bellydance is the best dance in the world. It's great exercise and tons of fun. It does require alot of hard work and practice but when it's done well theres nothing else like it. It's magical. Hip hop is a lot of neart tricks, but it just doesn't have the ability to mezmorizwe and hypnotize like bellydance does. There is also a lot of variation in bellydance so there many styles which you can choose from. If't very easy to find aa style that really helps to express yourself truely. Also for future reference us bellydancers don't usually like to use the term bellydance and it's obvious why when you read all the "bellydance is sexy" comments that you got to your post. Try calling it raqs sharqi, oriental dance, arabic dance, middle eastern dance, egyptian dance, lebanese dance, or turkish dance. Theres alot of other terms to use but bellydance generally is a term with a lot of misunderstandings and all you will get are these stupid "sexy" comments from people who often have never even seen a real bellydancer. Well both are very active and creative, but I guess it all depends on you. Belly dancing is more sensual and gives you great abs, while hip hop is intense and gives new dance moves when you go out to the clubs. My opinion: Take both! It can't hurt. :)

Belly is really great for muscle control and an excellent way to stretch muscles making you look more lean. It's lower impact on the joints, but still burns calories.

Hiphop is more aerobic in nature, is harder on the joints (especially the knees), and tightens the muscles rather than elongates them.

What's the difference. The belly dance was designed to lead men on. Hip Hop is designed to lead men and women on.

Depends on which you are confortable doing, or who you are trying to impress...

If you want to lose weight, go for Hiphop. If for self-esteem, go for belly dancing...
