The Gatling gun was the precurser to the modern machine gun, it was more like a sequence of fixed rifles firing in sequence, as opposed to Maxims Machine Gun, which many consider to be the first 'true' machine gun.
The British Expeditionary Force was the first army in the world to employ machine guns as a standard attachment to battalions, and they were first used during the African Wars, such as the Boer War

I think it was the Gatling gun and it was an american invention in the 19th century
