FTP or file transfer protocol is a commonly used protocol for exchanging files over any network that supports the TCP/IP protocol (such as the Internet or an intranet).

There are two computers involved in an FTP transfer: a server and a client. The FTP server, running FTP server software, listens on the network for connection requests from other computers. The client computer, running FTP client software, initiates a connection to the server. Once connected, the client can do a number of file manipulation operations such as uploading files to the server, download files from the server, rename or delete files on the server and so on.

Basically, provider of FTP depends on the servers in the internet or servers in a company intranet. And to use this FTP service, normally u just need to have the FTP client and the user name and passowod to access to that network.

some good FTP tools are SmartFTP, WS_FTP, FileZilla.

FTP = File Transfer Protocol

for exchanging files over the Internet. FTP works in the same way as HTTP for transferring Web pages from a server to a user's browser and SMTP for transferring electronic mail across the Internet in that, like these technologies, FTP uses the Internet's TCP/IP protocols to enable data transfer.
FTP is most commonly used to download a file from a server using the Internet or to upload a file to a server (e.g., uploading a Web page file to a server).

File Transfer Protocol - a method to transfer files across computers on a network. Many companies provide space on the internet to store files. If they have a FTP server and you have a FTP client or know command line FTP you could transfer files to this location.

File transfer protocol is software that allows you to upload and download files to a remote computer/server. Windows has built in FTP capability. Go to start, then my network place, then add a network place. You need to have a host with a login and a password when you set it up. If you don't use windows, there are other FTP programs such as cuteftp, etc.

ftp or file transfer protocol predates the world wide web by several years (it was standardised in 1985, in RFC 959). It provides a means of transferring files between computers.

FTP is the conventional way (most used) of transfering files to a web server.

There isn't such a gobal provider but your web host can offer it to you as another way of uploading your files (as aposed to a web based site manager). Usally you will need to pay for FTP Access if you are using a free host.
