Look at this from a different angle - What suits your shape, size and colo(u)ring best?
Go for that and then find out what era it best represents in case you are asked.
eg As I am a skinny thing I would look for a twiggy type dress or something from the 1920s.
Good luck.

i think the timeless look of a very classy ball or evening gown is the best and prettiest. i suggest looking back into the 50's (maybe earlier). get on the internet and look at some of the evening gowns worn by actresses in that era. many if not most of the dresses worn then were sexy without showing everything (which isn't sexy at all).
if your prom has passed, i hope you found a dress you liked and had a good time.

I would wear something from the 50's since that was a wonderful time for truly feminine fashions. You can even get away with a strapless gown for example with a poofy skirt. Add a wrap and beautiful necklace. Watch Grease or Back to the Future for good examples.

If you have to dress period for a formal dance like a prom, dress in a 1940s style dress. That is the most elegant. Don't do anything from the fifties, sixties, seventies, or eighties. Tacky.

whatever you choose , make sure that it the style and color complement your skin tone, hair color, and body type. Since it is PROM and not Homecoming I'd suggest a longer flowing dress...what ever you choose just keep it classic and elegant ,don't look for nessacarilly the "time era", just look for what you like and stay open minded (sweetheart necklines have always been one of my favorites)

Do a search online for different time periods. Go to the library, go to a fabric store and look in the costume section of books. Either Buttrick or Simplicity has historic costumes.

Have you ever heard of a "flapper" ? They were in the 1920's and they had a style all their own.. lots of beads, bobbed hair, they looked really cool... look into that, I'm sure you can do a yahoo search or something to see pics and get some ideas!!
Good luck....

Think "Gone with the Wind" southern belle. Also, think "Devil Wears Prada", "Breakfast at Tiffany's" (yay Audrey!), "Rear Window" (Grace Kelly!) and other movies from the late 30s, early 40s. Hope this helps! Have fun!

maybe you can try the retro era? Dressing up like marilyn mooroe would be classic and sexy.
(if only you are a fair blondie)
