The iPOD does suffer from this - the design technology seems to have ignored the fact that the builtin Hard Drive is very sensitive to knocks and falls. To me this is real deception since the device is marketed as a "take anywhere and withstand anything" type of entertainment device.
I know its too late for yours, but as a minimum, I would recommend a belt strap and a tough rubber casing for your iPOD.

look up spank or spanking ipod on google. the advice to try dropping your ipod again really isn't as silly as it sounds. Turn your ipod on it's belly and give it several hard spanks on it's botty. My son had an ipod with a sad face we tried everything it's warranty had run out so on his friends advice he gave it a good whack on the botty it really worked. Yesterday may cousin had the same problem he gave it a smack with the flat of his hand and that's back to normal too

you're in basic terms getting your self right into a pissing contest. Time to enable bypass of the gangster mentality. the two events are working as a team to break the rustic. Whom ever comes after BHO, will proceed the ball rolling, in basic terms like Bush persevered Clinton's stride. stop being a lemming, and attempt to have an unique concept. there is the place the subject is, no person thinks for themselves from now on.

On the Apple website, they list the steps you can take if you see the sad Ipod face - http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
You need to Reset, Retry, Restart, Reinstall and Restore your Ipod using the instructions on their website.
Good luck!
