You know I had this same problem and I let it go on for a year before calling the telephone company!
First of all is it a Broadband connection?
If so...........
You must have a microfilter (the little matchbox sized box with a little wire that pokes out) plugged into every piece of equipment that you have on your phone line.
I had only plugged the microfilter into the extension where my computer is and everytime the phone rang my connection was cut.... I only have one other point downstairs in my house, I hadnt put a microfilter on that, which the phone was plugged into.... the telephone company advised me to do this and since then I have never had the problem!

if u have a dial up connection and the phone is used the internet will be cut
if u have broadband like dsl it wont cut unless there is something wrong with the wires (not put correctly)

If you have dial up that will always happen, you need broadband, and a filter attached to the phone line to make phone calls when on the internet.

yaa this is common prob. if u want to use net through ur phone then u have to use the broadband service (using adsl line and a splitter) make sure ur service provider have this facility. i m currently using adsl modem connected to my phone line i never get disconnects when phone comes. also u will currently gets only 56kbps speed, but with adsl modem u can get upto 1MBps depending upon ur service provider and the plan u use.
