I don't think that there is a set rule!!!
Some people know when they are children that they want to be a fireman or an astronaut. Others don't until they are in undergrad school.
It's all selective to the individual.....

One is absolutely not a loser if one does different work than what one studied for. If you are happy in that work it doesn't matter. I'm a pretty successful businessman with several (international) companies, but none of them are in the direction of my study at the university. Why? Because my interest were too broad, because what had my interest changed, because I saw new opportunities etc etc. There is no specific age for knowing what you want. You are just lucky when you find it early (and it doesn't change in time). I know this: saying people are losers tells more about you(r) (attitude) instead about these people. Didn't find your way yet?

well it'd be great if people knew instantly what they wanted to be, without the indecision. unfortunatly, this doesnt work out. sometimes it's because it isn't realistic (we can't all be rockstars) and sometimes its because the profession of choice wouldn't pay the bills. (I would LOVE to go into anthropology, but the simple fact is, if you can manage to find a job, you'll basically be making minimum wage. not nearly enough to pay off the student loans.) So then it becomes a matter of deciding what you can settle with. a friend of mine was going to school to become a registered nurse after becoming a RNA, but after caring for her mom who was dying of cancer, her brother who got into a horrible car accident and her dads stroke, she found, that in the middle of her nurses training, she couldn't do it. so even if you think you know what you want to do, things can happen to change all that.

It's not a question of age. When I was in school, I wanted to be a Special Education teacher. I am working in sales in electronics. I have worked in retail sales (including an adult book store), a shoe factory, accounting, purchasing, and various other positions. When it comes to college, it doesn't matter what you major in. Get that degree in anything and then follow your heart with what you want to do.

I know a lot of people who never did find out what they wanted, or were afraid to try because of money, security, etc. And others know from when they're little children. So I don't think age is a factor.

i am 38 and i still don't know....i have had the same job since college and although it is fun sometimes, i don't feel that it is my 'career' --to me it is just a job. but now i feel kind of stuck in it, because if i tried another job at entry level it would take me a long time to catch up financially.
