ANS: The chicken did not look both ways before he crossed the road BECAUSE he wants to prove that he is NOT chicken about crossing the road and not looking out for incoming traffic...

chickens have eyes on the sides of their heads so it must have been looking both ways - and at the same time. Maybe thats why it made it across the road...?
