Having lived in both, I prefer Central London. The transport system is better in North London, but there is a bit of a snob value. South London is in general cheaper than North London. You can more or less find equivalent places north and south of the river: South London will be cheaper but the transport will probably not be as good. For example Brixton is the South London equivalent of Camden. As for safety, I think they're about the same. Rolex robberies are quite common in Hampstead, mainly due to the affluence there.

South would tip over the North as it is cheaper, a bit less crime and more down to earth. Rather live somewhere like Catford or Clapham than Kentish town or Primrose Hill

Born in the North lived there for twelve years.
Old Ford, West Ham, Bromley by Bow.
Lived South for five years.
Rotherhithe, Brockley, Downham, Sunridge Park.
Moved North again
Bromley by Bow, Forest Gate, East Ham, Essex.
I think the people North of the Thames are warmer in the North East than on the other side of the Thames.
Respect as I think you mean it is an unknown word to me.
I don't expect respect from anyone unless they know me.
I always treat everyone politely and say please thanks or sorry when there is a need.
From top to bottom, rich or poor, I have met very few who have not responded the same.
Approached by a prostitute I would say no thanks in the same way as I would to anyone else.
Show respect and get it.
Show a disregard to people and expect the same in return.
Oh and by the way the water is hard in both areas.
Nowhere is safe these days unless you are sensible.
The country has become the victim of greed.

Personally, I would hate to live in London. But if I did.....I would go for Richmond by the river. Very pleasant place indeed. I have no idea what areas command respect as I don't live there, and all the nice areas seem to border horrible areas.
As for the water, that is my major gripe about the place. It is foul everywhere (recycled beyond belief and just chemicals). You cannot have a decent cup of tea in London at all the mug goes all scummy....and life without nice brews is not on!!!

I have lived in both and I prefer South East London by far. It is more alive and feels more inviting. I lived in Forest Hill and I can highly recommend the area and it's surroundings.
I would buy a Brita water filter before drinking any tap water in the UK, just tastes so much better.

SOUTH SOUTH SOUTH. Lived there for over ten years then thought I'd see what 'leafy North London' had to offer. Nothing.
The people are rude and arrogant and think they're better people beacuse they live north. The parks aren't as nice, the drinking water's vile, there's nothing to do for children....oh I could go on and on but wish I'd never left Brixton.
