It can be explained as a theory, however not proven. As Plato believed approximately 3000 years ago, all existence is part of the mind. Something cannot exist if the human mind itself does not acknlowdge its existence. This is where he debated with his student, Aristotle, over this issue. Aristotle believed that something can exist, regradless of whether the human mind sees it and believes it there. Plato on the other hand argued that for a chair (for instance) to exist, the human senses must sense it and thus through cognition, the mind must acknowledge that this object is indeed a chair and exists. Hence, if the human mind can grasp a certain concept and believe in its existence to a certain extent, why can't we acknowldge that God exists. Granted we dont know much about what this being might be however if the human mind can 'think' it, why cant this being exist? When it comes to trying to understand the cognition of such a superior Being however, things become very complicated and illogical as no science in the world at the moment can support any theory we make. However if we take the above argument from ancient Greece into consideration and accept that this form of logical thinking is consistent in some form or another among intelligent beings, then it is very possible that a superior Being such as God may acknowelge our existence through His/Her/Its cognitive processes (however superior they may be) and thus we might feel we exist as we exist in an environment that accepts our existence. Its very complicated an noone can answer such a question with total confidence however it is interesting to search for such possibilities to the best of our human abilities and try to find logic in questions that indicate no clear solutions.

Existence can be explained as a thought in your own mind. God does not necessarily factor into the equation.

Can it be? Yes it can. It's a conjecture that was popularized a few centuries ago by an Irish cleric named Berkeley, so don't flatter yourself if you think you're the first one that tought of it.

It's a thought exercise, but a moot point really; whether or not we are just thoughts in the mind of God has no practical implications and is impossible to prove or disprove.

If by explanation you mean conjecture, yeah "anything is possible" as soon as you invoke a nebulous contradiction like a God.

So... la - ti - da.
