It derives from the word "emotional" and it's used for punk-rock fans that besides listening to the music adopt that way of life. you might even say that it's sometimes used in an offensive way. an emo person would look something like this: their hair lenght is cut to the lenght of the cheek bone (sort of the Nick Carter look) they have all these piercings. always dressed in black and maybe on skates. you can also tell by the way they talk..they usually copy each other so a certain speech pattern is present. The lyrics of the songs they listen to are emotional. There is a difference between emo and goth since goth is not always emotional and goths do look different than emos and the songs they listen to have a number of differences, meaning that goth music is not always talk about emotions. The main idea is that emos need to express their feelings in any way shape or form and goths think that life is pain...dark so on and so forth. Note that I am talking about that category of people that adopt the way of life and attitudes that are present in the songs not those who only enjoy the music

I wasnt going to answer this question since I've answered it many times before and it's getting annoying, but none of the answers satisfied me so I'll put in my 10 cents on the subject.
Emo is not punk or goth. It may be a subgenre of punk, seeing how hardcore is a subgenre of punk and emo is a subgenre of hardcore.
Emo came about in the 80s, and back then it was emotional/emotive hardcore. It was fast, agressive, screaming music with meaningful lyrics. But in time it changed thanks to bands like Sunny Day Real Estate and whatnot, and morphed into, well, to give you an example (a bad one, but an example nonetheless)- Dashboard Confessional. Emo now is calm, soft, soothing music with no screaming and emotional lyrics. Some of it is actually pretty f-ing good, it's not whiney like Dashboard and the music is just beautiful. Check out Elliott's "False Cathedrals" album. Gorgeous.
Unfortunately, kids these days believe that bands like Fall Out Boy and Panic! At The Disco are emo. This is, in my opinion, completely wrong. I always thought Fall Out Boy was more poppish-punk, and Panic just plain sucks, but whatever.
Emo is also a trend/fashion statement. Sigh, yes, this is true, unfortunately.
Emo kids these days usually wear black. The males wear black and pink, usually, have fashionable black straight hair (with some spikeyness in it, around the back), wear eyeliner and/or eyeshadow, and wear overly tight female clothing. Why? Because being metrosexual/crossdressing is "in" nowadays. "Emo" males are usually always bisexual, also, and like kissing other males. "Emo" females, though not necessarily smarter than males (maybe even more stupid so than males), are more masculine than males these days, but love seeing boys kissing. They would love to date a bi guy and dont even take into consideration that maybe (most likely) the guy she's dating and kisses on a constant basis has had some other guys' dick in his mouth or has had it up his a**, or maybe (most likely) the guy she's dating and whose dick she sucks and/or, um, has sex with, has had his dick up some guys' ***, or all of the above! Ew.
Sigh, kids today are sad.

So yes, to make the long story short, emo is a genre of music. It is also a trend. It's mainly a genre of music, though.

I hope that helped, or at least I hope it didnt paint a too disturbing picture in your mind. If it did, I apologize, but that's the facts.

There are two popular forms of dress that are considered emo. The first is essentially derived from the 1990s "indie emo" scene, and has connections to indie rock and punk rock. It includes more vintage and thrift store clothing, typically for a well-worn look. Some of the clothing leans toward khaki colors. T-shirts are typically of smaller sizes, and with various prints, often images from the 1980s. Bags and backpacks often have pins and patches of various bands.

The other popular style of dress focuses on darker colors. Commonly seen styles include straightened, dark colored hair, dyed either black, red, multi-colored (brown and black, red and purple, etc.) which covers one eye, or an unnatural dark hue, males wearing pants tailored for females, lip, eyebrow, and labret piercings, and dark make-up on males and females (most notably black eyeliner, although red eyeshadow is becoming increasingly popular). A common accessory for both males and females is glasses with a dark coloured (usually black), thick rim, a style sometimes even worn by persons who do not require corrective eye-wear.

Converse All-Star style shoes are common amongst both styles of dress, as are Vans and other skate shoes.

While "emo" is often used to describe the dress and attitudes of fans of emo music, "emo" as a musical genre and "emo" as a slang term are largely separate. "Emo" as a musical genre long pre-dated the use of "emo" as a slang term. At the same time, most current bands are labeled "emo" unwillingly, largely because they share some of the fashion trends and attitude associated with "emo" as a slang term.

There is also a common stereotype that associates "emo" with self-harm, most notably cutting wrists, partly due to song lyrics associated with "emo" bands, which often speak of acts of self-destruction. However, apart from the anecdotal, there is no significant evidence of any correlation between emo and self-harm.
