The death rate from complications related to liposuction is about 1 in 5,000, although the actual death risk when liposuction is performed by a good doctor is somewhat minimal. The death rate within the first 30 days of gastric bypass is normally quoted to be at about 1 in 250. The long term risk of death is considerably less than the long term risk of severe obesity.

I watched a TV program about this not too long ago on PBS(public broadcast) when I was thinking of having lipo done - I'm not fat, but at 49 and in a size 6, I wanted to go back to my normal size 3. After watching the program, and seeing what could and DOES happen, I've now decided that I am comfortable in a size 6. I would never have it done ... the risks are too great.

My friends sister-in-law died about 4 years ago from lipo to the thigh area. Her lungs filled with fluid and she died right on the table. She was only 32. All surgeries carry some form of risk.
