MacArthur Park by Jimmy Webb was first performed by the actor Richard Harris (later known as 'Dumbledore') in 1968. It is a song about the end of a romance, the sentimental lyrics
'someone left the cake out in the rain' are more about the winding down of the romance and should not be taken literally. It has been covered by lots of people, including Donna Summer,
'Weird' Al Jankovic spoofed it with his 'Jurassic Park'. Richard Harris got to no 4 in June of 1968, 38 in Jul of 1972, Donna Summer got to no. 5 in October of 1978.

I think the cakes a metaphor for his lost love. And i think MacArthur Park may resemble a cake in some crazy way. But Jimmy Webb songs are pretty cool any way.

Jimmy Webb answered this on a daytime chat show I watched.

He said that it was the style at the time to take a lot of drugs, write whatever came into your head, and let other people worry about what it meant.

As far as he knows, it isn't about anything, except his drug experience.

It is about a romance that someone invested a lot into and then it went awry, leaving the ailing lover feeling emptiness and that it may be impossible to find that true love again because they wanted what they had in the first place.

You know, I've always had such a loathing of the song ever since I heard Richard Harris murder It that I've never listened to the words and I don't wish to start now.

It apparently had no meaning--it was just a jumble of words put together...people interpreted it in many different ways.. I loved the song.
