He is actualy knawing on the soft silicone that is used to cement the tank together. eventually the tank may fall apart. Give him lots of knaw sticks and let him knaw on them. If you fancy some fun put a brand new toliet tissue roll in the tank and he will chew it up until he has lots of fufy paper bedding and make lots of runs and tunnels himself.

I don't think the silicon will harm him but you may want to check with your vet. You might want to get him a cage designed especially for rodents - one that can stand up to their constant chewing. Make sure it is big enough for plenty of toys and appropriate things to chew on. Hamsters get bored in tiny cages with nothing to do and no place to run around. Also make sure the pan on the bottom is deep enough for plenty of nesting material. Digging and building nests will give them something else to do besides chew. Good luck and hope this helps!

you need to just leave him alone.... once he shreds it its all gone..... plus he isnt actually eating it he's tearing it all apart. so unless the fish tank is made of mostly rubber your screwed. good luck... this is no problem compared to what has happened to me... my two female hamsters had babies today and yesterday now i have like 30 hamsters!
