Not to flashy with images, you must consider other users who may have a lower connection speed and it will take forever to load, good navigation....if its a personal page and you dont care, feel free to be creative but if its for business, keep the above in mind...

From the tips page of my own website http://www.john-duck.co.uk/html/first_websites.html

1) Try to keep the layout of stuff on your pages (text, images, etc) simple, so it’s just as easy for someone using a shagged-out Pentium2/3 PC to access your site (in terms of speed) as it is for some flash git using the latest spec computers.

2) Avoid putting background sounds / music on your pages, as most people find they get right on their nerves + also makes the page take longer to load..... and in some cases cause their computers to momentarily freeze-up if they’ve been running a few hours.

3) Keep images on the page to a reasonable size (I find .jpg images no bigger than 373x249 are best..... place a link on them to a larger version if necessary).

4) When picking which font(s) to use, remember some are harder to read than others. “TIMES NEW ROMAN”, “AERIAL”, “VERDANA”, “GEORGIA” & “MS Sans Serif” are good ones to stick with.

5) When picking a username (e.g www.geocities.com/jduck1979) or Domain name (e.g. www.john-duck.co.uk) for your site, remember to keep it as simple as possible so it’s easier for visitors to remember it for future reference

6) No pop-up adverts...... If you insist on using adverts on the site, stick to Google Adsense (in 7yrs of building websites, that's the only one that doesn't rip you off and / or keep sending ads to your site after cancelling your account without notice for "lack of activity" like Commission Junction does!).

7) A carefully chosen webhost, such as http://www.1and1.co.uk that has a good Datacentre with plenty of bandwidth, allows you to host your own scripts, and doesn't bombard your site with their own adverts and/or temporarily shutting it off after receiving a large quota of visitors like with free hosting packages (e.g. Geocities, etc)..... preferably hosted on a UNIX / LINUX based server.

8) No script errors, deadlinks (404error - page not found, etc), or links pointing to the wrong page.

9) Evolves steadily, rather than a sudden make over that isn't always for the best... consult regular visitors about any changes before making them..... there's many websites I don't go to now after that:
- jokes.com
- fool.co.uk
- Pythonline.com
- Yahoo Groups & Profiles (only grudgingly go there if I have to now, these days).

10) Easy to navigate
