I always cut my cuticles but sometimes I cut too close and bleed heavily. I've never gotten an infection or anything. Which is a better method overall in appearance, safety, and effectiveness? Could I get some support (how do you know)?

Pushing back the cuticles looks untidy, where as cutting them looks like you've put some effort into it.

Beware though, if you have thicker nails, your cuticles are more likely to grow back thicker too

Put a little dab of your shampoo into a small bowl of warm water and soak your fingers for about ten minutes. Then use a cuticle brush and lightly scrub your nails. Put a drop of cuticle remover on each cuticle and lightly rub it over your cuticles. Let it stand for three or four minutes and then push them back with an orange wood stick. After you've done this give them another little soak in the sudsy water and another light brushing with the cuticle brush. Use hand cream every day. Each time you wash your hands use the towel to gently push the cuticle back. After you do these little manicures once a week and daily moisturize your hands your cuticles will not need to be trimmed.

I do a combination of both.

First soak them and push them back. Wait until they are still a bit soft but mostly dry, then cut the dead skin off.

If they are very thick, try carrying a bottle of lotion or oil and rub this into the cuticly several times a day and pushing them back gently with your nails.

Go get a professional manicure, and pay attention to how they do it so you can do it yourself. Pushing them back is much better.
