Shaped? no. influenced yes. and depending on where you live in this world, the influence can be strong or not even present. And weren't the Spartans influenced by something or someone as well? If so wouldn't it be safe to assume that whatever or whoever that is would be the original and true influence?
good question by the way, that's the best i got though.

Since Spartans had classes with Athenians and we were fortunate that Athenians had dozens of Universities and the first Democracy, Spartans are presented by people who do not know much as non democratic, philosophers, etc.!
One of the greatest ever political figures and statemen is Lycurgus, from Sparta. His laws were the governing of of Spart for about 1,000 years! They were having an army of less than 1,000 and still they were un-defeatable for many centuries!

Without the Spartans helping the other city-states, Greece could have been taken over by Persia. Many ideas of the later Greece could have been stifled by Perisan rule.

our lives, sam, were neither shaped nor influenced by the spartans any more than they were by any other ancient race. the lives of the americans(and i'm assuming you are speaking of american culture) were influenced by the cultures from which we as a society are directly and most recently ascended,eg european, african, mexican, asian,etc.. indeed the spartan culture has long been passe' and has in no way had any effect on our society. The lives of the whole human race is shaped by our ancestors - be it Spartans, Barbarians, Mohican's or Brahmans.
Once the world became closer and people started interacting - it all became a mixed culture !
