In my home town, about 75% of the nativeamericans drink and bum for more beer. They drink almost 24 hours a day and cause problems from everyone in the police department down to the store desk clerk. How do i not hum..."assume" that all of them are drunks?

Well, based on your statistics, if you meet a Native American, there is a rebuttable presumption he is a drunk.
However, you should still give that person the benefit of the doubt.

First of all, we know that words like "all" and "every" spell trouble from the beggining. You have stated that 75% of them are drunk. I don't know about where you live, but I wonder if that number is a little high. I also wonder if the only ones you see are when they cause trouble. You don't see the ones that are at work and being responsible citizens because they are at work and being responsible citizens. They are rarely on the news and you probably won't trip over them as they are homeless in the street.

I would guess that if 75% of them are drunks, then each one you meet has a 1 in 4 chance of not being a drunk. You have to take that on a case by case basis. Would you want someone to lump you in with the worst representation of your race? No you would want them to see you for the individual that you are. Give them the same benifit of the doubt.

Yes it is stereotyping. You are not evil for making your observation, unless you use it to judge every Native American you meet. You should, however, understand that the Caucasian culture introduced the Native American to alcohol.

Compare the substances alcohol and tobacco.

When the Caucasians arrived on the American continent, they brought alcohol. The Native Americans introduced the Caucasians to tobacco. Ironically, tobacco is one of the greatest health threats to the Caucasian population. Lung cancer is a killer, and smoking causes it.

What I am trying to say is that another society can introduce a substance that they consider 'social or medicinal'. Another culture will take the same substance and abuse it. Native Americans were never "pack-a-day smokers" but Caucasians commercialized tobacco, and made it convenient to smoke 10-20 cigarettes each day.

Nobody can argue that alcohol has not been devastating to the Native American population. Some reservations completely prohibit alcohol. DUI fatalities are common in areas where Native Americans have to leave the reservation to drink.

Please, turn your observation into compassion and action. Do not hate people for their weaknesses. We all weakness, but fortunately we don't all share the SAME weakness....

thats bullsh*t what everyone else is saying. i'm irish ok. my family has a history of alcoholism liek you wouldn't believe. weak minded people fall into things like that and make excuses for it. I have the genes of a drunken bum, but I am still a functioning member of society. I would agree with you but you did say 75% so now i think the flaw in your statistic is how you worded it, not your subjects. stereotypes liek that pop up really often and its hard to deal with because no one likes being called a racist for making an accurate observation. but i guess the lesson in this is that there's truth behind every stereotype. it was started for a reaosn you know?

that's a undesirable habit(smoking something) I grew up in a undesirable section the place drugs crime etc have been common. in my opinion the main addictive drugs are a million. Tobacco 2. Meth/Crack/heroin 4. Coke(no longer crack) some others/ prescribed drugs. 5. Alcohol 6. Caffeine 7. Marijuana the main threatening/detrimental/deadly a million. Meth/Crack/heroin 2. Tobacco 3. Coke(no longer crack) some others/ prescribed drugs 4. Alcohol Marijuana could be way way down the checklist in case you spotted I positioned tobacco over Coke as i understand countless recuperating drug addicts who nonetheless won't have the capacity to stop smoking! Marijuana whilst i'm particular isn't hazard loose(what's?) Is greater of a undesirable habit like chewing gum or bighting nails. it could make you lazy(no longer continually) As for that's legality nicely Prohibition merely does not artwork. If Communist China has a drug project(they do) and could't end it even with draconian measures how is a "loose" society going to end drug use? The warfare on drugs isn't purely a failure that's been the reason of Crime Gangs Violence Hatred of the police in damaging factors. i've got self assurance the "warfare on drugs" is far less approximately drugs and greater of an excuse to militarize police, decrease human rights, and smash fundemental constitutional protections inclusive of Confiscation without due technique. Warrant much less or ridiculously user-friendly to get warrants for searches. SWAT communities(protection tension on family soil) loss of due technique.(mandatory sentencing?) i ought to care much less regarding the medicine that's the warfare on drugs it relatively is KILLING human beings and tearing American society aside.

Well, you can assume that not all of them are drunks because you just told us that only 75% of them drink.

Also, did YOU know that native Americans have a biological prediliction for alchoholism? That they are physically pre-disposed to become alchoholics faster and more easily than almost any other race? (Except perhaps the Irish).

it would appear that most (not all) natives of any land have a low tolerance and a high urge for alcohol. this of course is our fault for pushing the grog onto them and confining them to reservations it is exactly the same in Australia. the tribe elders here are trying to get the young bloods back to following the old ways and giving up the booze!!
