I certainly believe that life does exist on other planets but whether they are intelligent beings or micro organisms remains to be seen. I guess that being the only beings in a universe that is 17 billion light years across is strange indeed! This does bring up the possiblity of a multiverse that contains many universes though! The conditions required for life have been discovered on Mars but they had disappeared hundreds of millions of years ago. For an astronomy discussion visit Astrowhiz on Yahoo Groups!

SMARTIE: The age old question.. and a very good one!
When you say "life forms" I will just go with my interpertation of "intelligent life".
I've been into astronomy, and physics, ever since I was little.
I sat in front of my parents little black and white tv on July 20, 1969 when Neil Armstrong set foot on the Moon. I was 7 years old. Neil was asked, years later, "Are you proud of being the 1st man to set foot on the Moon?
"No. I'll be the proudest man to first come back from the moon."
In responce to your question: Yes, I'm sure that life on a molecular basis is prevelant throughout the universe.
As for "life forms" or "Intellgent Beings" again, I have no doubt.
But the universe as we know it is so MASSIVE, it defies human comprehension.
The problem is simply this: distance and communication.
Realize this: When you look to the nightime sky... you do not see the stars as they presently are..
You see them as they used to be.
People say ther is no such thing as a "time machine".
The nightime sky "is" a time machine.
Most every star you "see".. the light that left that star has travelled
billions of light years before it reached the retina of your eye.
The brightest star in our sky, sirius, is 8.6 light years away from us.
Light travels at the rate of 186,000 miles per SECOND...
just like radio waves.
Imagine 8 and a half years.
The moon itself appears as "it was" nearly 2 seconds ago.
Answer:
"Intellegent Life" may be out there...
But we will never know for sure.
As for SETI: we may recieve a mesage of "hello" or "we need help", but it may be millions, more than likly a billion years old.
But I don't belive that will ever happen.
The creator of this complex and fasinating universe will take care of his creation.
We have the wonderful gift of exploration, and discovery!!

At this point, we do not know.
Less than 20 years ago, everyone would have said that life forms cannot exist without photosynthesis (light used to transform minerals into food), then they discovered strange new life forms at the bottom of the ocean that used chemosynthesis (chemical synthesis) or thermosynthesis (heat synthesis). Suddenly, scientists realized that life could exist not just on the surface of a planet or other material body, but also deep inside under extreme conditions (life forms under extreme conditions of heat or cold are called extremophiles). So, before 20 years ago, scientists were not looking in all the "right" (i.e., possible) places. Today, they are searching for life deep inside the earth itself (and finding it!), and using the tools of exobiology (exo=outside earth), they are finding many more possible sites for life than before...But they still haven't actually found it. This is all hard work...Cryptozologists (people who search for animals claimed to exist, like bigfoot) haven't been able to verify claimed life forms on earth (like giant serpents, bigfoot, little people, mermaids, etc.), so you can imagine that it must be even more difficult trying to find life where we can't touch (or haven't touched yet).
BUT: There probably exist billions of sites in the universe where life is possible...We just have to find ONE. Wait a while. It should be done in a few years.

Of course - they came here to work as "politicians"
Most of the life forms in the Universe have had two billion years longer to evolve than we have. To put this time span in perspective, two billion years ago our ancestors were amoebas.
Observations of extrasolar planets and the rate of star formation in the Universe compared to other Earth-like planets in the Universe, our Earth is extremely young. Three quarters of the Earth-like planets in the Universe are older than the Earth and their average age is 1.8 (plus or minus 0.9) billion years older than the Earth. If life forms readily on Earth-like planets -- as suggested by the rapid appearance of life on Earth -- this analysis gives us an age distribution for life on such planets and a rare clue about how we compare to other life which may inhabit the Universe.

Other lifeforms routinely visit our world. The people at the Top
think we are too stupid to handle that, and we will panic. So they
cover it up. But I think the opposite is true. If we find out at the last
minute, that will create panic.
If humans are battling, and beings from higher dimensions are battling over this world. Wouldn't it stand to reason that extra-
terrestrial are battling here too? There was actually a film
made in space that showed a carft of some type being shot
at by what appeared to be a particle beam weapon. Did you
see that film?

If earth can support life, so can some other planets elsewhere in this vast universe support life ,but the problem is they might be so widely distributed and distant that we may not find out for sure.Who knows for sure? It was only a couple of thousands of years before that each continent had its own isolated people who never thought that life never existed elsewhere

We exist and are here now. Over the centuries, your planet was a curious place to visit once or twice and was not considered very interesting . Sure, your wars showed us how undeveloped you are as a species and your infantile,(in cosmic terms) dependence on god concepts does not bode well for you. We are now showing an interest in you because it is not often that we get to observe a species commit suicide. You are so close to maturing as a sentient species and it will be a shame to see you kill yourselves. There are just not enough of you becoming rational enough to force the issue. You let the least among you determine your fate, so be it.

"we've been transmitting radio alerts for the better area of a century" -- no, no longer centuries - a century optimum. Please supply source in any different case. You look forgetting those radio waves might have reached a optimum distance of one hundred mild years faraway from Earth. The universe isn't one hundred mild years throughout the time of - this is over 13,000,000,000 mild years throughout the time of. whether there become clever existence that existed a million years that could advise their planet must be precisely a million mild years faraway from Earth, in any different case their radio waves might've long surpassed Earth, or nevertheless be traveling in the direction of Earth. genuinely you at the instant are not basing people to be the main clever species interior the universe over radio alerts? i in my view have faith with approximately 70,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars interior the universe there are thousands of planets with clever existence on. The universe is greater greater advantageous than our brains can comprehend.

Its hard for me to imagine that in the whole vast universe, the only existence of life is on this one single planet. Probability wise it just doesn't make any sense, actually it seems kind of elitist to think that its just us and the animals and plants and amoebas and no other life forms exist.
I am not claiming that I know aliens and that they walk on two legs and have two big beady eyes and two hands and are green - but there must be SOMETHING... don't you think?
