Phone British Gas again...........................
Now for the good bit if you are on hold or have the automated answer phones keep on pressing the hash and the star key (alternatively) repeatedly it may take a minute or 2 but somehow you skip to the front of the cue and you will get to speak to a real person. I don't know how or why it works and it probably doesn't every time but it is worth a go.

I don't know if this will help you out until you can get a repacement key:

"You can also recharge many electricity keys or gas cards and buy pre-payment tokens for your gas and electricity."

Why go to a gas company for advice about electricity?
Try the Electricity board, or go to their workplace in person

The only place is your electricity supplier. You could try contacting them through their website.
www.gas.co.uk
