the thing is - life is nice in the burbs. we live in a forest, we take winding back roads whenever we can, commute via public trans, shop a lot on computer (really, only groceries are bought locally.) I can walk three minutes to a beautiful riverside. Life in the city - ugh. Too noisy, too dirty, not enough open space for raising a kid. The country - beautiful, but my kids want to be near people.

There is already a movement to revitalize, redevelop and repopulate downtown areas which benefit both elderly people and the 40 and under crowd.
This is particularly true in my town....check out http://www.downtownmakeover.com
I live downtown, and it's far from being stinky noisy or smelly. It's a cultural center where I don't have to travel more than a mile to get to my job and 50+ restaurants and art galleries.
Surburban sprawl will stop when they run out of land.

Just a comment. You better hope it remains the same. If ever the government fails, the dollar goes south, the electricity fails etc, then Americans will resort to two things,
1.Their bible and or 2.Their guns.
Then you will see millions leaving the bigger cities in fear and you would see colonies every few miles away from the city jungle and marshall law with the marshall being whomever they decide. And I bet you would as well see racism as never before.
