A diamond is a natural crystal formed in a volcanic enviorment of carbon. The 'pipes' where they are mined are the throats of the volcano where the rock (serpentine) has decayed into blue clay which on the surface becomes yellow clay. Being natural good crystals are rare and perfect might be considered impossible. Some of the problems are inclusions (specks of other minerals inside the crystal), fractures (cracks which affect the cutting and thus the size and shape), color (white diamonds are the popular but far from the only ones as there are yellow and pink to black), size (the carat part of the deal since the good large ones are not as common) and clarity (in other words how well you can see through it).

Color, Cut, and Clarity

As close to colorless is best. Graded by letters where a "D" color is better than an "E" etc.

Cut refers to the proportions of the dimensions. Many diamonds are cut for weight and thus are less than "ideal". "Ideal cut" diamonds have the best proportions to reflect light.

Clarity refers to any inclusions of flaws within the diamond.

These three "C's" along with the 4th "C" (Carat) effect the price of the diamond.

All diamonds are precious, but the most valuable are those combining the highest qualities of carat, clarity, cut, and color – the four C's.
