Multi Level Marketing is just a method of distrubution of products through word of mouth. Instead of advertising, the company encourages users to spread the benefits of their products through word of mouth and them pay them a comission to thank them for helping them with the marketing.

MLM scares people off because it is also a business concept for people who have little capital and want a chance to become truly successful and rich.

As it is a people's business, during the course of running their business, some people may not be ethical and may have used trickery (let's have dinner and end up bringing them to some boring presentation), hard selling (if you dun buy anything you are not going home tonight).. etc...

After a while, the scary stories travel around and most people end up scared of MLM.

But Singaporeans are more informed now about MLM. It is legalized and there is a constitution called Direct Sales Association governing it.

Less people are scared of MLM these days and more and more of them are joining MLM companies. Singapore, according to studies by the DSA has one of the highest volume of growth in the region in terms of number of people going into Network Marketing.

Depends on your abilities. You will be selling and mainly trying to attract more marketers who will in theory pass money to you and you pass on to others above you. What I would say though is if you are going to have a business whether to earn an extra income or with the goal of making yourself serious cash -do you really want to work that hard to make all the people above you in the upper levels rich? Start your own business and give the rewards to yourself and your family. You will be at the bottom of a large pile of people. Not a great business model in my book.

Multilevel markeitng is the greatest invention in business marketing since the early dawn of civilization. it creates coheson and cooperation along manknd because it binds them together through self interest ( basic instinct of human) and an instinct to help others ( basic instinct of man as well). the only difference between multi-level marketing the regular marketing is that is cost the individual person investments in time and money to make it worthwhile for him or her.

From the US Federal Trade Commission website: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/invest/mlm.htm

Multilevel marketing plans, also known as "network" or "matrix" marketing, are a way of selling goods or services through distributors. These plans typically promise that if you sign up as a distributor, you will receive commissions -- for both your sales of the plan's goods or services and those of other people you recruit to join the distributors. Multilevel marketing plans usually promise to pay commissions through two or more levels of recruits, known as the distributor's "downline."

If a plan offers to pay commissions for recruiting new distributors, watch out! Most states outlaw this practice, which is known as "pyramiding." State laws against pyramiding say that a multilevel marketing plan should only pay commissions for retail sales of goods or services, not for recruiting new distributors.

Why is pyramiding prohibited? Because plans that pay commissions for recruiting new distributors inevitably collapse when no new distributors can be recruited. And when a plan collapses, most people -- except perhaps those at the very top of the pyramid -- lose their money.

The Federal Trade Commission cannot tell you whether a particular multilevel marketing plan is legal. Nor can it give you advice about whether to join such a plan. You must make that decision yourself. However, the FTC suggests that you use common sense, and consider these seven tips when you make your decision:

Avoid any plan that includes commissions for recruiting additional distributors. It may be an illegal pyramid.

Beware of plans that ask new distributors to purchase expensive inventory. These plans can collapse quickly -- and also may be thinly-disguised pyramids.

Be cautious of plans that claim you will make money through continued growth of your "downline" -- the commissions on sales made by new distributors you recruit -- rather than through sales of products you make yourself.

Beware of plans that claim to sell miracle products or promise enormous earnings. Just because a promoter of a plan makes a claim doesn't mean it's true! Ask the promoter of the plan to substantiate claims with hard evidence.

Beware of shills -- "decoy" references paid by a plan's promoter to describe their fictional success in earning money through the plan.

Don't pay or sign any contracts in an "opportunity meeting" or any other high-pressure situation. Insist on taking your time to think over a decision to join. Talk it over with your spouse, a knowledgeable friend, an accountant or lawyer.

Do your homework! Check with your local Better Business Bureau and state Attorney General about any plan you're considering -- especially when the claims about the product or your potential earnings seem too good to be true.

MLM means that to make money you must bring people into the system to work under you, making a sort of pyramid. Theguys at the top make lots, guys on the bottom make little. That said, in the FEW legit MLMs, a good salesperson can make good money.

Internet marketing is a great way to work from home.

"The term network marketing (NM) is used in two ways. In popular usage it is a synonym for multi-level marketing and often mistakenly considered the same as a pyramid scheme.

The concept of "network marketing" is often used to describe a marketing paradigm that stresses the interconnectedness of market actors and transactions and can be viewed as the application of systems thinking to marketing. According to network marketing theory other marketing paradigms see the discipline as consisting primarily of dyadic relationships (ie., one buyer and one seller). Network marketing wishes to overcome this limitation by looking at transactions and relationships from the viewpoint of all those involved.

This perspective originated in industrial marketing, also called b-2-b marketing, where multiple contact points are typical. It is not uncommon, for example, to have several decision makers in a company's "buying centre". Likewise, the marketer can be organized into a "selling team". With multiple actors on each side of the transaction, a complex network is created. This paradigm is further complicated by corollary actors like information gatekeepers, influencers, advertisers, and intermediaries. This network can expand over time as more people get involved.

The network marketing approach sees marketing as a system of social networks where the relations between each of the links must be understood, including potential feedback loops, while at the same time, the system must be comprehended as a whole."

Now, here's what I'll tell you. Many people are going to tell you that Multi-Level Marketing is a pyramid scheme and ultimately they're quite wrong. Harvard business teaches multi-tier marketing as they call it and it's a phenomenal to earn great residual income if you're cut out for it.

I think the best Multi-Level Marketing businesses use Zig Ziglar's philsophy in that, 'We can get whatever we want in life, if we help other people get what they want as well."

If you sign up someone you're getting some money (EVERY MONTH) as long as that person is signed up, but now they also have the opportunity to make that money. So what keeps it from being a pyramid scam? The fact that there is a service or a product that you're offering the people signing up, and therein lies the benefits of a good MLM company.

Look for one that is going to give you all the tools and training you need to succeed for yourself, because eventually if you get people signed up, who get people signed up, etc and on down the line you can just walk to your computer in your pajamas and make phenomenal income. Getting there isn't easy, but some have done it and if you join a program that will give you the tools you can too.
