I could understand it back in the Classic Hollywood era when the dangers of smoking weren't as prevelent but why smoke when it's bad for you?
When I see an actor or actress light up, they don't look cool, they look ridiculous. What's so great about smoking anyway? My grandfather died of emphysema, my other grandfather died of a stroke (but he had a growing, quarter size tumor in his lung), and a family friend died of lung cancer.
::exasperated sigh:: Thanks for allowing me to get this off my chest.

To Sean T.:
I didn't mean to come off as judgemental. I was asking a question, both inquiry and rhetorical.
If you want to smoke, go ahead. It is a matter of choice after all.

Why does anyone smoke? Celebrities are not perfect. Like us they are human, have flaws and make uninformed decisions. The only real difference between them and us is that they are rich and people look up to them even at their lowest.

The same reasons any other human being smokes.
They know it's bad for them but they are one of the following (or all):
a.) Stupid
b.) Ignorant
c.) Addicted
d.) Don't care about the effects
e.) Love it
f.) Do it just to maintain a certain image/reputation
There are so many reasons.
And you can't pinpoint one reason for all.
It's just a choice some people make.
The same way people choose to drink or do drugs or speed or jump off cliffs or God knows what.
It's their use or implementation of their personal freedom.

You probably don't think it looks cool, but a lot of other people do. They've all read the caution labels on the cigarette packages, but those warnings really don't matter to them. If it's in, it's in.
But celebrities don't always take up smoking on their own will. For example, they may be forced to do it as a part of a movie role, and consequently develop an addiction. The weak-willed will also give in easily to taking up smoking as a means of stress-relief. It's supposed to be very effective.
Lastly, a lot of people dying to be thin take up smoking in hopes of losing weight.

Why do some actors and actresses snort coke, have promiscuous sex and shoot up heroine? I don't know.
I am sorry to hear about the medical complications your family has suffered due to smoking, but reality is that there is an entire list of behaviors that people know are bad for them, yet they still do it.
As for why people do things like that, I don't think there is an easy answer.

It's called personal choice. Nobody is forcing YOU to smoke, so I would expect the same in return concerning MY choice to smoke. If you extrapolate the same mindless "it's bad for you " rational, humans would have died off tens of thousands of years ago.
Quite frankly my dear, it's none of your damned business what I do...
