I just held my breath for the longest time yet, 3min 6sec. What is the best way to improve time and are there any negative effects in training to hold your breath

If a swimmer is breath-holding, the carbon dioxide builds up quickly and this produces an inescapable urge to breathe, the so-called “breath-hold breaking point”. This happens before the oxygen level drops to dangerous (hypoxic) levels. The swimmer surfaces and breathes. The reduction in oxygen levels is then corrected before loss of consciousness occurs.

This safety mechanism can be delayed or by-passed by taking deep breaths (hyperventilating) before breath-holding and submerging. This hyperventilation removes carbon dioxide from the body. Without a build-up of carbon dioxide the safety mechanism is not triggered and the length of time that a swimmer can hold their breath can be extended - but only by the swimmer becoming more hypoxic. Swimmers may simply slow down and lose consciousness. In ensuing breaths water, rather than oxygen, enters the lungs and the swimmer drowns.

ABOVE may be an extreme case, but you should be aware of the dangers if you're going to continue doing this. Be careful!

As far as I know breathing is a reflex. So if you hold your breath to the point you pass out, you will automatically start breathing again. The only way that can hurt you is if you do it under water.
I cannot say what it does to your brain though, because if your brain goes without oxygen for too long you could become a vegetable. But I think that takes a lot more than 5 or 10 minutes.
Free divers can hold their breath a long time even with the pressure of the water compounding the difficulty. You might find better answers on a site about free diving. Good luck with your new found talent!
