Today is hard to tell because there are so many variations on the fastball. It isn't always throwing the hardest. Sometimes a 93mph snuck by on the outside corner after a nice changeup is better than a harder pitch.

In the past, Nolan Ryan and Bob Gibson defined the fastballs for their eras.

Some of the best lesser-known fastballs came from the 80's and 90's. Rob Dibble, Randy Myers, Doc Gooden (only in his first 3 years, though) the Rocket, and Mitch Williams all had scary fastballs.

My personal favorite fastball was Randy Myers, an old reliever for the Mets in the late 80s. His heat was strong, but it also had an effect of coming at you faster because his motion and release were qucker than when he threw junk. GREAT hitters used it to their advantage, but the rest wer baffled.

Either Johan Santana, Francisco Liriano, Rich Harden or Scott Proctor.

All have blazing fastballs that push and sometimes exceed 100 mph. Harden is an incredible pitcher but it's a shame that he has been injured. Lesser known Scott Proctor has a great 100 mph fastball with less control. I'd say Liriano or Santana, giving the edge to Santana the veteran.
