I have ingrown hairs on my knees. They're not serious just annoying. I've read several solutions but some articles have told me that shaving increases your risk and others say waxing does. So which is better to decrease ingrown hairs: shaving or waxing?

I just need to know which is better: shaving or waxing? I have already read methods of preventing ingrown hairs. I've also plucked with tweezers. Does that make it worse?

To set the record straight, brand_new_monkey is incorrect - shaving does not take the top layer of skin off.

Waxing removes the top layer of skin when you wax, as well as removing the hair by the root. Shaving just takes the top of the hair off, leaving the root and the layer of dead skin cells.

If you are prone to ingrown hairs, then either method will result in having them. You are less likely to get ingrowns from waxing though, as every time you wax you are removing dead skin so as the hair doesn't get trapped underneath.

To minimise the risk, try using a body scrub before you shave or wax as well as a lotion afterwards.

As far as I know, waxing makes hairs grow in.
Waxing is better in the long run, makes the hair grow less, but does cause more ingrown hair. The reason shaving doesn't do that is because when you shave you also remove the top layer of skin, and that doesn't allow hairs to grow in.

What I usually do is wax, and every once in a while shave the ingrown hairs a day or 2 after waxing, so that they wont grow in, and I'll be able to wax them next time round.

Shaving---it gives the illusion that it is thicker because it cuts the hair at an angle...... it is still the same hair size

Waxing----it doesn't make it do anything along these lines. Waxing/plucking actually over time will kill the hair bulb making it not ever grow back. By doing this, since the new hair has to grow---it has a less sharp/angled edge and appears thinner and softer because it is new

personally i like to wax...

waxing is better because it doesn't cause ingrown hair by pulling from the root. You can tweeze inbetween, you can buy this astringent called Tend Skin which helps eliminate ingrown hairs

waxing has more ingrown hairs if you dont put lotion on after you wash your (whatever you waxed). Waxing is so much better because it enventually makes the hair stop growing. shaving is only good because it doesnt hurt.

Plucking (tweezing), Shaving, Depilatory creams and Waxing are temporary hair removal methods.Waxing usually lasts for 3 weeks, but it is painful. Electrolysis and laser hair removal are "permanent" hair removal methods but are expensive and you have to find a trained professional, otherwise your skin could be damaged. A review of the various hair removal methods is available at

Waxing since it completely pulls the hair out by it's roots. Although some like it, it definitly can be painful.
