that I didn't need that system. I am not a gamer at all and everyone is saying that its good for gamers. I'm just a college student thats sick of having a crappy computer thats slow and freezes up.
My current emachines computer that I've had for 3 years has 2.20 GHz, 40 GB hard drive, 128 MB DDR. It was really cheap but grandma bought it for me so I can't complain.
The XPS 400 that I ordered has 2.80 GHz, 250 GB hard drive, and 1GB DDR2 (is this the memory?) I have absolutely NO CLUE what any of these things mean but it has to be better than what I have. I'm only going to use it for home use for online, research, writing papers etc. NO gaming.
I paid $1212 total. It comes with 19" flat screen, photo all in one printer, security software, spyware and Microsoft works suite 2006.
Did I spend too much for what I need it for? I'm just tired of computer problems and not having enough memory etc. I can cancel it if I did. What do you comp geniuses think? What do you suggest?

No need to wory, you bought a good computer for everyday tasks, it has dual core for fast multitasking and DDR2 memory. You have enough memory, the graphics is low end radeon x300 but good enought for you but you can always upgrade if you want, looks like a good deal to me.

This computer may be slightly over the top for simple research and Internet, but not by much, and because it is over the top, it will be usable for a longer period of time than a 'normal' PC. The extra couple years of usability of the hardware will most likely pay for the price, and with the other hardware, you should be fine with that computer. The 1GB DDR2 is RAM and that is to temporarily store files for use by the processor to reduce strain on it. That hard rive will last you for the life of your computer unless you start ripping thousands of songs or days of video to your computer if you are just going to write papers on it. I have nearly every word document I have had in school for the last 7 years and it takes up a small fraction of my 112GB hard drive on my computer which i use for gaming and music.

Look to tech publications like PCWorld, and PCMag.com and
TechRepublic.com to evaluate security software.
For Antivirus, Panda is well rated, as is McAffee, Norton is well known and respected. For Antihack Zone Alarm Pro is the leader, but personally, I have had issues with this software. There is not yet a good alternative, but all the above mentioned sites are working hard on intergrated firewall suites. Stay tuned.
Enable your windows firewalls, and update them daily.
Download one for antihack and one for antivirus, and run regular free scans at antispyware sites. Load antispyware as needed and dump when done.
You should be fine. Update this computer as soon as it is booted, then load firewalls. Configure firewalls.

No you did good. Windows Vista OS is due for release in Jan 07. Your computer has much of what is needed to run Vista. Just because it is a good gaming machine doesn't mean you have to play games with it. That just means it has the RAM and HD storage needed for downloading and playing games.
No, you did good. You will now be ready for Vista.
You will also have a fast computer that will make doing research much easier and faster. You will be glad you bought it.

I think that you got a great computer for a good price. You will be very happy. It is an tremendous upgrade to what you had.
A real "gamer" PC would cost more than double of what you paid, so you did not overspend.
Enjoy!

The price is decent for what you got included. Did you get a warranty with the package? A 3 year on-site warranty would make it a really good deal.

Computer Slow
Download and then run startup.exe (FREEWARE) at:
http://www.mlin.net/startupcpl.shtml......
Can't live without it and windows...
Then disable and/or uninstall whatever u don't need.
Other things to try:
1 - Disk Cleanup (removal of temp files, cookies, etc.)
2 - Defrag
3 - Registry Cleanup (CAN BE VERY RISKY!)
FROM A HARDWARE PERSPECTIVE THE BEST AND MOST COST EFFECTIVE POSSIBLE UPGRADE (IN GENERAL) IS THE ADDITION OF MORE MEMORY (RAM).
ALL ELSE FAILS - RELOAD YOUR O/S (WINDOWS) AND THEN REINSTALL ALL OTHER PROGRAMS YOU NEED/USE!
