Both previous answers are partially right. Hillman was a fictional college that Cliff Huxtable attended on the Cosby Show, so it only made sense that when Denise Huxtable went off to college, that it would be at the fictional Hillman. The first few seasons of "A Different World" the exterior shots between scenes were none other than Spelman College.

Hillman College was a women's college in Clinton, Mississippi from 1853 until 1942. It was founded under the name of Central Female Institute. It was organized by the Central Baptist Association. Hillman College remained in operation during the entire American Civil War. In 1942 it was purchased by and merged with Mississippi College. Credit to Wikipedia.

Hillman college is based on HAMPTON UNIVERSITY and the HBCU system in VIRGINIA, not Spellman. Watch the show sometime and you will hear them reference Virginia and even Richmond.

It s a fictionalized Hampton University in Virginia. The characters are in VA and the interior locations are reminiscent of the campus setting. Early exterior shots were of Spellman, however as I said earlier, the College is largely based on Hampton.

I don't believe it is a real school but I think it's supposed to "stand in" for Spelman which is a liberal arts women's college in Atlanta.
