In homosexual relationships one partner is generally more masculine and the other is more femanine why is this? Why not two purely feminine women or two totally butch males?

That's based on a huge generalisation. I've not known many couples where the guys take on any sort of stereotypical gender role.

I think you'll find in most gay relationships, there is a certain crossover by both people into the roles of both feminine and masculine.

You cannot generalize in this way. It depends on the dynamics of each relationship. However, in some gay relationships, one partner is exclusively passive, while the other is largely dominant, but that certainly doesn't mean that all gay relationships are like that. It is the same in heterosexual relationships. In some, the woman clearly "wears the pants", while, in others, the roles are more traditional.

ummm....i think you're wrong. there are.and quite a lot of them.
just because someone has a role in bed doesnt mean he doesnt act as a butch. and the opposite also true.
remember south park, and how the devil is such a butch. Now, when he and Saddam (i repeat, south park) are in bed, who's the butch and the efeminate?
i see exatcly the same in real life

I"m sure there are exceptions where both are feminine/butch. but In hetero relationships people also tend to be more feminine then the other. people are different everyone varies, thats my only guess.

You're probably just more likely to notice that type of relationship because it more fits the societal idea of what we should expect. There are plenty of relationships that don't meet that standard.

I think you're buying into stereotypes. This is not always the case.
