But yes indeed as many have said his name is James Howlett. (I might have spelled it wrong). Fun Fact: In WWII Ultimate Wolverine was called "Lucky Jim" by Captain America.

James Howlett
Marvel did a six issue series around 2000-2001 that explored the true origin of Wolverine, it was called Origin.
The name Logan came from a former friend who ended up killing Wolverine's father. Long story short, after outing himself as a mutant he goes on the run with a girl named Rose, and in desperation she gives his name as Logan and he adopts this new personality.

Logan.
Ironically, my son loves X-men and his favorite character is Wolverine. When our 3rd baby was born (a boy) was asked him for name suggestions. He said wolverine, which was not really an option, but seeing as his real name was Logan, and we loved the name, guess what we chose.

James Howlett. He adopted the name Logan somewhat late in his life.

He's known as Logan nowadays! But around the turn of the century (yep, he's THAT old!), he went by James. I wish I had my Origins TPB in front of me so I can put my finger on his last name. Might have been Howlett, if memory serves...
