I'm interested in buying land in New Mexico, what are some thing that I should look for ?

I'm considering purchasing land in Deming, New Mexico; I eventually plan to build a home there, If things work out...I've found out that half acres are going for a little over two thousand dollars apiece... Can anyone tell me about the surrounding area, and what things I should look into when securing land for residential purposes?
