One could guess, it could also be a regional thing. Don't forget that alot of restaurants have already been serving loaves of bread or tortilla chips as appetizers before we were even born. I don't indulge on spinach dip since mayo is usually a main ingredient.

Its very popular at home, but I have yet to see it on a restaurant menu.
