In some studies yes, but the general approach is more broad. As Allport put it, social psychology is an attempt to understand and explain how the thought, feeling, and behavior of individuals is influenced by the actual, imagined, or implied presence of others. There is also a current focus on the cognitive factors underlying behavior at a personal level. Thus it is about more than just person-to-person interactions. Many, if not most, studies do not involve direct interaction between participants. They may also study perceptual and other cognitive phenomena within the individual, even without a direct link to how it relates to other people (though applying the findings can usually find a link).

Haven't actually witnessed an actual study, but I'd say it's true as it require observation and comparison between individuals.
