Both on occasion. I enjoy it; as a writer, it gives you a built-in feedback and fanbase, and as a reader, it allows you to jump into a story already familiar with the characters. And contrary to what many will say, I do think it hones writing skills by allowing writers to experiment with plots and ideas in a familiar setting without fear of rejection.

No, I don't. Or at least, I have not for many years. Sturgeon's Law applies to fan fiction with a vengeance.

Surely you have heard of Sturgeon's Law. Many years ago, science fiction writer Theodore Sturgeon was asked, "Why is 90% of science fiction such [BS]?" "Because," replied Mr. Sturgeon, "90% of everything is [BS]." This became known as Sturgeon's Law.

In the late 1970s, I met Mr. Sturgeon at a science fiction convention in San Francisco. I asked him if he did not think 90% was a rather generous estimate. He agreed that 95% was more realistic. Lately I've been using 99%.

And who has time to sort through all that to get to the 1% good stuff?

the international of fanfiction is a extensive and huge one, yet frequently if this is achieveable and would not thoroughly substitute the characters' personalities for the sake of delivery it somewhat is a usually constructive one. i'm usually no longer irked by skill of fanfiction as an entire, and countless people certainly pull them off quite nicely. on the different hand, people who do no longer tend to no longer by skill of a protracted shot, so there is not any longer lots of a grey section. Fanfiction as an entire, although, is totally great in my e book.

I started writing fanfiction a few months ago after reading some great stuff at fanfiction.net and coming up with my own ideas prompted by the season finale of my favorite show, House.

I never write it and rarely read it, because I much prefer to develop my own characters and plots. Sometimes, in the line of work, I write spin-offs, but I prefer more freedom, as the characters I am given to wite about are never like anyone *I* would have invented.
