Well, First good luck on your classes ! Second Unfortunately people are Unintelligent at certain times in their But NOT always. Yes America is a great country .. you should also know it is inappropriate of him to give his personal opinion and can be considered treason against the country for saying such a thing .. You can go to your Dean and inform him you might want to wait though till you are dun with the class or you can also ask to be transferred to another class if you are uncomfortable in his class .. Specially since you are paying for the class you have the right to get a teacher you are comfortable with .... Be strong don't be intimidated by people who have such negative opinions...

unfortunately your English teacher is stupid, if he had said that 50 percent of Americans did not know which way the earth rotated around the sun he would probably be crorrect. I bet that your English teacher does not know that the earth wobbles on it orbit around the sun, that its orbit is on an angle, that we traveled through space spinning around the center of our galaxy, most people in America do not have a university degree or have advanced studies. This only makes these Americans unaware of these facts, because they are too busy making a living to put their children in school, to build homes, to buy cars, to give jobs to teachers and many others, yes America is a great country, and has a lot of great people unfortunately it has a few idiots, and some of those idiots are teachers who don't think. All the best from the country north of you, I wonder if this teacher knows what country that would be...

I don't think Americans are any more or less stupid than people in the rest of the world.
Every person has a base of knowledge and a whole lot of experience. People everywhere learn about what they are interested in.
Lots of folks don't worry about how the solar system works, but they will know about something else.
You did not mention your country of origin, but I think that people are not all the same there.
America is a very big place and its people have lots of different strengths and weaknesses. Please go out and meet some Americans and decide for yourself what you find helpful and what you dislike.
Good luck! English is a tough language and America is a hard place to figure out. Welcome! I hope you find much joy here!!

Well the fact that most young Americans are ignorant when it comes to questions like that. I think your English teacher has a personal problem with teaching. Maybe he once taught in schools in the south.
Your opinion is correct, the American is a great country and it has great people. When it come down to brass tacks the American people always pull together to save the butts of weaker countries. We may not know that the earth revolves around the sun, sadly to say but we do know that our freedom is worth fighting for and it doesn't come free.
Keep up the good work and welcome to our country.

America is built on Immigrants....Welcome to your new country!
Since your English Teacher is within the 50% of (stupid) Americans....if indeed he is American.....tell him to stick with the English Lessons, and not the Science teachings.
Hey.....come on up to Michigan in mid January, we'll have a Margarita and share a Snowball fiesta! Non-alcoholic of course.
Watch that Heat down there!

You do not have to know english to be stupid. Look at George Bush. By the way, the Earth revolves around the sun. Yet the Son revolves around the Father. Isn't English crazy?

Your teacher is there to teach you English not to express his opinion on politics. Austin is a city where most of the residents, are liberal (to the more left of center), so take that in account. If your goal is to become a citizen, it is your responsibility as a voter to make up your mind as to who you should vote. Many don't take this responsibility seriously, I don't know if this is 50%. I'll suggest the League of Women Voters, they provide an unbiased news paper of each candidate and their views.
It is unfortunate your teacher uses his position to try and influence your views!

Not neccessarily!
United States claims to have high literacy, but what does that mean? The say 97 or better can read or write stuff. Literacy does not mean common sense or basic wisdom from books. Americans are barely educated to USE the knowledge taught by public educational institutions that are everywhere. We remember for the test but dont apply to our life. We are just trying to "make money" which is the main goal in life, so education comes and goes as if its news. This makes alot of citizens uneducated. Common questions of "what is your zip code" is frequently answered with their "area code", citizens barely know the founder of US, how to pay bills, or how to stay healthy mentally and physically without obesity or depression. Sorry to say most americans live a common, simple life with a focus on being happy by being settle, stable, secure. This is fought throughout life with owning possession of the 3 C's... Car, Castle, Career. If you are blessed enough not to live in urban america, then you may engage in citizens with 60percent basic education. Education is from money and Money equals class or social status. So its safe to say there is a large number of low income citizens without education. Education is increasing rapidly but has not rolled over yet. As more govermental financial aid and their attempt to recruit, there will be more continuing education and high school students seeking degrees. Give it a decade and we will have to raise the standard again to say we are mostly dumb, lol. So yea, education has been slowed by precence of the individualistic society having met the technological era of today's times. Meaning we rather have fun by watching, playing, interacting with media. To answer your question.... He's telling the truth and i advise getting a good circle of educated, mannerly, and established people that could ad to you life by networking, conversing, or depending on. America is a land of opportunity, as well as risk and danger. Take care and good luck in the US.

America is a great country, but it is run by a small percentage of more educated or crafty people.
Wisdom is not so high on Americans' priority. Practical knowledge is. Americans don't tend to want to learn anything unless they can make a buck at it.

Everyone is best at something. Noone can be best at everything. When it comes to Calculus, for instance, I feel like a total idiot. However, in my line of work, I hardly find anyone as good as I am (not being boastful, just trying to make a point here).
