I think that rule is a silly one anyway. Who made it up? - I bet it was someone under 20 who had major image concerns (ie looking cool being a priority).
If she said she had a movie to watch, that was rude, however there may have been genuine circumstances. I'd give her one more chance.

No, it doesn't make you look desperate - but read the signs - she could choose talking to you or watching a movie and she chose movie. she is not interested. Don't call her again - then you will look desperate.

Calling the next day is fine. It shows you're interested. Did you talk to her? How did you leave it? Follow through on that. If you left her a message now it's in her ballpark to call you back. Don't call again yet if that's the case.
Take your cue from her.
