It depends on the situation... if you have high blood pressure... or an irregular heart... or any other health problems that might compromise you or your baby... then you might need to get a c-section. Other than that it's up to you honestly... I heard that without an epidural that most women don't want another child after that... but then again every woman is different. Good luck!!

You are smart for asking other mothers, also remember to ask your doctor for advise and do some research on your own about the medications and procedures that are available to you. The more info. the better prepared you will be to make an educated decision about pain relief when those contractions hit.Everyone handles pain differently, and not everybody's experience with child birth is the same. I thought I would have a high pain tollerence, I was WRONG! My water had to be broke which did not give my body time to adjust to the pain, so I opted for the epidural. The epidural injection was a wonderful decision for me. It was not painful, because I was already in pain from the contractions, but boy did it give me relief. My entire birthing process was 12 hours, for 10 of those hours I was pain free, due to the epidural. The doctor will tell you that the epidural will sometimes slow the process down, but I was in so much discomfort that I really didn't mind at the time, I just needed relief. I have sisters that went through their births without any medication of any kind, and I tip my hat to them. I couldn't do it, maybe you will also have an easy time of it. You won't really know until the time comes, and whatever decisions you make, don't let anyone make you feel like it was the wrong decision, there are no wrong decisions, only the right decision for you at the time. Congratulations!

I wish you had asked this before being full term, but even now you could take a crash course in prepared childbirth.

Modern medicine is wonderful in many ways, but pregnancy and childbirth is not a disease situation, and for most women with a normal pregnancy, natural delivery makes a lot of sense. While things like epidurals are relatively safe, no intervention is 100% free of risks and complications. The main cause of great pain in labor and delivery is fear.

Fear causes tension in the muscles and you end up fighting your own body and the natural impulses. Believing that you can do this and that women have done this for eons helps. If you can have the assistance of a nurse/midwife or a doula, it would help a great deal as well. You also need an supportive OB.

The most important thing, the best thing, is to use the method that is safest and most effective for you and your baby. You need to be able to trust your doctor and your own best judgment.

Best wishes to you on your great adventure.

Get the drugs!

no I'm kidding! It's up to you I took drugs with my daughter but bye the time she was ready to come they were all gone!
It still wasn't Excruciatingly painful!
The thing that hurt the most was the contractions!
Wow!
I really don't want to scare you but wow!
it's almost time and I'm sure you are about ready to burst with excitement!
The best advice that I can give you is to prepare your self!
Expect the best but be ready for the worst! try and do it naturally but if the pain becomes to much then don't wait defiantly get an epidural.
Most importantly I want to say having a baby is a joy and it's nothing like you're expecting! It changes ever thing!
Congratulations!

DI would say it depends on the woman and the circumstances. If you can go natural, you deserve a medal. I haven't had any children but I have seen the birth of my nephew and 3 nieces. The mothers all STARTED out going natural but eventually the pain got to them an they started hollering for DRUGS!!

Your OB/GYN will tell you his or her suggestion. Most of the time they prefer to do it natural, but if there are conditions that require a caesarean then they should let you know.

Also keep in mind that a C-section takes longer to recover from, since it is surgery.

Really there shouldn't be any other options unless there are complications. By the way congratulations. Enjoy your rest while you can.
