F1 is a short form or an abbreviation for Formula One (not Formula 1)..
There was a Formula Two (F2) series, but it was replaced by Formula 3000 in 1985, which, in turn was replaced by GP2 last year.
Several European countries have a domestic Formula Three (F3) series' and there is a European Formula Three championship.
If you want to know why a specific race series is called Formula One, then that's a different question entirely. In a nutshell, it's called Formula One because it's to top formula in a category for a specific type of racing.

There is f2 and f3 called by other names - F1 is to identify the ultimate - the most superior in the sport of Formula racing - there are other categories as Formula 2000, 3000, Ford Formula, Formula BMW etc.
A1 is also a form of Formula racing !

It is an abbreviation, where F is Formula and the 1 is just one. It also goes the same with the Japanese Grand Touring Championship which is named JGTC (go figure). Hope that helps. Also F2 and F3 is another class or formula racing.
