He (or she) must exhibit self-sacrifice for something greater than him or herself. A man who risks his life to save a stranger is a hero.
I can't stand it when the call a survivor of a plane crash a "hero." That guy is not a hero, just one lucky son of a gun.

a good hero must have a good imagination, must be thoughtful, intelligent, fair, strong or a skilled combatant, the best are mysterious, and they don't discriminate when it's time to save someone.

There are no heroes.
What seems to be courage is really the manifestation of a survival instinct commonly referred to as the "flight or fight" response.
If someone responds to this instinct by fleeing, that person is said to be a "coward." If a person fights, that person is said to be "courageous." In either case, the decision is NOT conscious.
