This question has recently been asked by "Exousia Skotos", but i'm looking for a different apporach for an essay. Consider the concept of the yin-yang. The universe is a balance of good things and bad things. Good things cannot exist without bad things. So, does this mean that without hate, there cannot be love? this leads me to wonder whether peace is really worth it... i mean is it possible to have peace? If the universe is a balance of both good and evil, can peace exist without war? hunger or poverty?

i think that if you are going to make the case that a thing's opposite is necessary for that thing to exist, you should focus on actual opposites. So i think it would be more accurate to say that "without non-love there cannot be love." In order to recognize the feeling of love there has to be a feeling of non-love to contrast it to. Otherwise there would only be love all the time, and it would be unable to be distinguished. But non-love is not the same as "hate."

I think that this holds for all sensations, even hunger. To be able to talk about having hunger, there must be a state of non-hunger that it can be contrasted to.

This might also be true of wealth (that in order to be able to recognize it, there must be an opposing state).

But I think that the existence of these oppsing states are only necessary for us to be able to talk about them, not for their actual existence. If there were never feelings of non-love, we would be unable to define the feeling of love, but it would be entirely possible that it would exist (and exist constantly, if there is no non-love). It is entirely possible that hunger could be eradicated, or that there could be world peace. These may be unlikely events, but it is possible that there could be non-hunger but no hunger, peace but no war, good but no evil, etc. If this state ever obtains, and people lose their memory of worse times, then they will probably not be able to talk about peace (because they would experience only peace) but that doesn't mean the peace doesn't really exist.

I think that what you are saying is true for the existence of our concepts of things, but not for the actual existence of the things themselves.

It's possible for love to exist without hate. Think about what great weather is, not to cold, and not to hot. Now imagine living with every day's weather being like that, never having bad weather. The concept of weather in general would not exist since there would be no variation, but that would not change the fact that the weather is great, it just means that you may not appreciate it as much as some one who knows what bad weather is.

The concept of yin-yang, is actually more about complementary forces, not dualistic forces. Rather then thinking of it as good and evil, it is more like man and woman, or tall and short. A tall person can grab things up high, a short person can get into spaces a tall person would find it hard to, together they complement each other rather then fight with each other.

I think that's a good question. I am a religious person, and believe that some day there will be peace. However... Philosophically speaking. Without God, there wouldn't be a devil. If there wasn't a devil to tempt us, man would not sin. If man did not sin, there would be peace.
Or because there is no balance, would it just be complete chaos?
Take coyotes, and rabbits. When there are a lot of coyotes, the rabbit population is small, causing the coyotes to starve, and become disease ridden. This in turn dwindles the population of the coyotes, making a favourable environment for the rabbits. The increase in rabbit population then allows for coyotes to thrive, and increase their population... One big cycle. The same can be said about any part of earth, including man. History truly does repeat itself.
I may have created more questions in answering your question, like how can I be such a walking pyridine? But I am content with the fact that I have answered your question.

properly no not particularly. Hate and love are particularly on an analogous part. there is an interest nevertheless, even if one IS the adverse and constructive, it truly is nevertheless an analogous element. you may want to assert we would not be able of entice close what love is that if it weren't for apathy. constructive won't be able to be defined and determined without the adverse and those 2 might want to genuinely be more beneficial of the option. effortless yin and yang. international peace might want to intend not something if it weren't for conflict and suffering. No not something without something. No lack of existence without existence. No black without white to verify it. Hate and love are nevertheless pursuits in something or someone so hence this isn't authentic. you've a decision to hate or love as a man or woman. yet in a way it truly is likewise authentic, you do not recognize you're a 'lover' without understanding there are 'haters'. yet both do not ought to exist in a unmarried man or woman in the way you 'opt for' to love or hate.

i believe peace can never be reached in general at all. the world is so different and each individual has his or her own opinion. there will never be a compromise the satisfies everyone. without war there cannot be peace. without hate there cannot be love. feelings are all connected. to understand one point you must understand the other. im not very good with words tonight but i hope this makes sense. and i believe you asked a very good question.

You may have a valid point here....
If we have free will, then we have to have something to choose between. Therefore evil must be necessary as we could not choose between good and good for instance. Perhaps hate is necessary for us to be able to choose to love.
