A chain reaction is a series of reactions that have been set off by one initial reaction, much like a row of dominoes being knocked over by tipping the first one over, and also like a pool shot in which the cue ball sinks a whole bunch of balls due to the ball it hits knocking more balls into the pockets, like the famous shot by Jackie Gleason in the movie about Minnesota Fats. Gleason claimed he did it without trickery, and probably wasn't lying, as his skills-- unlike co-star Paul Newman's-- were on a par with the other late great fat guy. A reaction going from one atom of uranium to another is the basis of an atomic explosion.
