You must also realize, the US has had very few presidents in its history.
Most people will see 6-8 presidents in their whole life-time if they live long lives. We've only been around a couple hundred years. Much less than the many centuries most countries have been around.
There will probably be a woman president in the coming generation or so. Only more recently have women aspired for the position. (assuming there are aspirants now, there may still not be).
And yes, things have changed in the past 4 decades or so on womens acceptance into the political processes, but no use re-hashing that.
Its possible we have a few 'up to the mark', but presidents being quite rare, (there is only one) we may be waiting still for awhile.

While there may not have been a woman president yet, many women hold influential positions in the USA. Condoleezza Rice is one example. Hillary Clinton is another example of a powerful woman in our government. It is not that the women are not able to do the task, or that there is a lack of motivation. The real answer to this question could be sexism or some other cause, but it is not because they are unable to do so.

First off, the USA is not currently heavily Democratic...it's heavily Republican.
Secondly, men have always held the office. Think about how recently in history women were permitted to vote, and how recently women were accepted in high titled in the work force. A woman will hold the office, but not in the next few years. The Good Ol' Boy network just isn't ready for it.

Sexism is inured in the United States. This is why women are underrepresented in Congress, and, of course, on the Supreme Court and in the executive branch (0%). But, if history is any indicator, we may see a woman elected president in 2008. I am no fan of H. Clinton, but the Republicans' dread has some legitimate cause. (Hillary Clinton either lied when she said she had no idea about her husband's filandering proclivities, or she was as stupid as a rock. I think, of course, the former is true. She won't likely get my vote. I've never voted for a pro-death penalty politician.)

well, first your question is flawed. this country may look modern, liberal, and democratic, however it is indeed ran, ruled, and fooled by the right wing fascist republicans.... A FEMALE president is by no means undesireable nor unwarranted but it is infact to those in power not in thier best interest. It is for the same reason we will never see anyone other than a white pres. remember the poopular vote is not always the winning vote.

I think that these are the factors.
1. Oppression of women in our society. We aren't mature enough of a society to realize that women would do a better job.
2. Power hungry men. More men want to be President because there are more power hungry, arrogant, self absorbed, and ego-centric.

Because this country is still run by White men and the "good ol' boys network". Until that is broken once and for all, there won't be a Woman or Minority President.

Maybe because our winner take all system shuts the door to fair representation for women. If more women were in Congress, I bet you we'd see serious female candidates from both parties. But I hope Hillary breaks the tradition and wins in 2008!!

i imagine it truly is an over-generalization. I see very rude human beings from each and each side of the aisle in this talk board. in case you seem (and it would not even want to be that heavily) there is call calling from adult adult males, women persons, Democrats, Republicans, Liberals, Conservatives, and one yet another version. i don't believe of a particular political bent causes rudeness. i imagine it really is human beings commonly, responding to what they construe as an attack from the different side. i think you receives quite a few rude solutions to this question. because at the same time as it really is phrased in this variety of fashion to seem harmless, i imagine we both comprehend it really is no longer.

THE USA HAS A NUMBER OF WOMEN WHO COULD DO THE JOB. OUR VOTING PROCESS DETERMINES WHO THE PRESIDENT WILL BE... STRANGELY ENOUGH NOT BY A MAJORITY VOTE BUT BY THE ELECTORIAL COLLEGE...AFTER THE ELECTIONS ...
THE USA IS NOT A LIBERAL COUNTRY.WE ARE A COMBINATION OF LIBERAL AND CONSERVATIVE WITH SHADES IN
BETWEEN.. ..
WE WILL HAVE A FEMALE PRESIDENT WHEN IT IS THE RIGHT TIME...
