most of the original southerners were english/scottish/irish/ or black ( also french if louisiana). there was virtually zero german, polish, italian, etc. influence. the accent is a blending of the 4 groups communicating together with very little outside influence.
there are many different southern accents, depending upon where they live. each accent depends upon the percentage of scottish, black, etc. that were in that area.

Graced by the Southern Skies.
I love our Southern accent, I also like to hear strong Scottish and Irish accents.
Just so long as the language isn't abused and the person has a pleasing voice, I appreciate any and all accents.
Accents and dialects are developed by their geographical location and available influence, it separates us by degrees.

We pick up "accents" in our formative years as we listen to those who speak around us. Lots of people have accents.

Because 200 years ago, the people in the South got together and said "What can we do to make ourselves different from those damn Yankees." And someone suggested changing the way everyone talked and sounded. It was voted upon and was passed unanimously.
Ever since then, Southerners have sounded the way they do.

It is simple - just don't stop between words -- let all the syllables roll into each other and you to can have a southern accent.
