Sounds like you have answered your own question, go with Detriot, maybe the plot/characters might end up in either New York or Chicago, if you write a second book....third book? hope the project goes well

One of the best suggestions I ever got from an English teacher is write what you know about. Go with Detroit to start, you can always have your characters head to Chicago or New York later, and besides, everyone reads about those major cities, it'd be nice to read a story that takes place somewhere else.

This might sound funny, but where do your characters "feel like" they're from? Each of those places has a distinct cultural vibe to it, and your characters will probably take on some of that vibe. (Unless part of the story is that they DON'T fit in!)

Another thought is, which setting are you most familiar with? I think if you really know an area, it will shine through in your writing, giving it a strong sense of place.

All that said, it sounds like your gut is telling you Detroit, which is an interesting place. If so, go for it!

How about Boston? Several movies have been made in Boston.
